Hi Bailey,
ReplyDeleteSeems like you have a wide range of students in terms of abilities and needs!
It seems like KW really needs a lot of language input and support. How does he attend to the classroom teacher? He looks like he gets about 2 hours a day of Teacher of the Deaf support, is that correct? Because of his late diagnosis, he has missed out on a lot of language development opportunities. It will be crucial for you to push in as much language as possible!
Unilateral hearing levels can really present some unique challenges. How would you rate your comfort level and understanding of unilateral levels? Seems like KG really benefits from pre-teaching, which is great!
For RG, I wonder about the concern about memory. Based on his goals and current levels of performance, he doesn’t have anything addressing memory concerns.
Just curious how you feel about each student’s current placements and supports. Do you think their needs are being met? Why or why not?
Hi Karla,
ReplyDeleteKW is a student who I never see in the general education classroom, so I can not speak to how he does in this setting. However, I will get back to you about that after I speak with his DHH teacher and aide who is always with him in the general education classroom. I am with KW during his auditory time Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I made it work with my schedule that I head to work with him for 20 minutes each day. However, yes...he does have quite a bit of time that he works with the DHH teacher on a daily basis.
With KG, this is my second year as her interpreter. I feel like I have a good understanding of her specifically...but maybe not unilateral hearing levels in other cases. KG is an enthusiastic learner and absolutely love school. She is a joy to work with.
His memory is something the DHH teachers have been trying to navigate. I think they have been trying to work with him on his auditory memory to help with this problem. I truly believe his memory issues stem from just not listening and paying attention, but also I think there is something going on inside his brain that is not preventing his memory from working correctly. I also have my own personal belief that diet may be something hurting his memory. Every day it is sad to see what is in his lunches...all foods that provide very little to no nutritional value. I'd be extremely interested in seeing how and if his brain would thrive if it was being fed properly.
I believe all of my students needs are being met. I am blessed to work with such amazing DHH teachers who have their students best interests in mind and work hard to make accommodations and modifications for the students they work with.
